One taken and one left

In Matthew 24:40-41, I was always of the mind that the one "taken" was the "elect" and the one left behind was the unsaved.

But now I have read that it is actully the one left that will inheret the Kingdom, so now I have read it both ways.

I would love to hear more input on this, since now that I have read it both ways I am unsure.
