  • Glory of God's Grace

Paul used a beautiful phrase to describe the believer’s position in Christ: “By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God” (Romans 5:2). A blessed change took place in our souls when we were inwardly changed, touched by God's spirit to comprehend the Savior. "For through Him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit" (Ephesians 2:18) and "In Him and through faith in Him we may enter God's presence with boldness and confidence" (Ephesians 3:12). Being justified by faith, we have peace with God. The Lord’s kindness and mercy wraps around us without record or reference to our past mistakes and failures.

What makes Christianity different from all other religions in the world? C.S. Lewis, a longtime defender of the gospel once said, “Oh, that’s easy. It’s grace.” God’s grace is an essential unifying central theme of the faith for believers to understand. He freely extends His outstretched hand of forgiveness to humankind because Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross purchased forgiveness and salvation for anyone who accepts the living sacrifice.

God’s grace enables us to persevere. No matter who turns against you, no matter what obstacles you face, no matter how many times you fail. God's incredible grace is there to pick you up, to revive lost hope, to heal broken bones, and to strengthen your weak will. It is never inadequate, nor is it ever depleted. His grace is not dependent on our actions to make it real but we must acknowledge His grace and live it out to realize its power. An understanding without application is of none-effect. The Bible reveals to us that grace “teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age” (Titus 2:11).

If we use the analogy of a sword for truth, then grace provides the grip to wield it effectively. Grace provides the strength and the skill to victoriously apply biblical truth in the battles of life. The ministry of the Spirit that Jesus inaugurated enables the truth-seeker and the lover-of-the-word to grip truth for life and living. When we hear the sermon, read the Bible, or read a book with important biblical principles, we can grip the truths that we received and begin living by them. We need not be frustrated by a loose or slippery grip. "Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip" (Hebrews 2:1).

In her book, "Lord, I Need Grace to Make It" Kay Arthur writes, "For the victorious Christian, the one who lives as more than a conqueror, grace is more than a theological term. Grace is a reality, a fact of life. It is by grace that one becomes a Christian, and it is by grace that one lives the Christian life." The very heart of the gospel is the supreme truth that God accepts us with no conditions whatever when we put our trust in the atoning sacrifice of His incarnate Son
